Why Intel is reviving the Intel One Mono font

Intel One Mono was set to be discontinued in September 2026. Intel archived its GitHub repository. Shortly afterwards, the company reversed its decision and brought the font back.

Why is the return of a single typeface worth paying attention to? Intel One Mono was never designed as a typical corporate font. It was created for programmers. Its purpose is to make code easier to read while also addressing the needs of developers with visual impairments.

Intel One Mono was designed for programmers

Intel introduced One Mono in 2023. It is a monospace font, which means that every character occupies the same amount of horizontal space. This type of font is commonly used in programming.

Intel developed the typeface in collaboration with Frere Jones Type and VMLY&R. Developers with low vision and blindness were also involved in the testing process.

The goal was clear. Create a font that makes long hours of reading source code more comfortable.

Its design reflects this purpose. Similar looking characters are easier to distinguish from one another. Adjusted letter proportions also make it easier to navigate through text.

Intel One Mono supports more than 200 languages that use the Latin script. It comes in four main weights including Light, Regular, Medium and Bold. Each weight is also available in italics.

Why Intel initially discontinued the font

In September 2026, Intel archived the Intel One Mono repository on GitHub.

The decision was part of a broader reduction in the company's open source projects. Intel had been discontinuing projects that were no longer actively developed or had lost their original maintainers.

One Mono had also seen relatively little development in recent years. According to Tom's Hardware, the font had not received a significant update since 2024.

Intel quickly reversed its decision. The repository was restored and the font remains available as an open source project.

A corporate font can be about more than appearance

Brands often create custom typefaces to build a consistent visual identity. Intel One Mono follows a slightly different logic.

It is directly connected to the world Intel operates in. Technology, software, developers and code.

As a result, Intel One Mono creates a distinctive visual style, makes code easier to read and reflects the technological character of the brand.

Here, design is more than decoration. It has a specific purpose.

Accessibility was part of the design from the start

People with visual impairments were involved during the development of Intel One Mono. Their experience helped shape the appearance of the characters themselves.

Clearer differences between similar letters and numbers make code easier to navigate and help reduce the risk of confusing one character with another.

The benefits are not limited to people with visual impairments. A highly legible font can help anyone who spends several hours a day looking at a code editor.

Intel One Mono shows that accessibility does not have to be added to a design afterwards. It can be a natural part of the design process from the very beginning.

A font is also a digital asset

A font is more than a collection of files stored on a computer. It comes with different weights, versions, licensing terms and usage guidelines.

Just like logos, photographs, icons and templates, fonts are part of a brand's digital assets. When several people work with them, everyone needs to know which version is current and where to find it.

BrandCloud makes it possible to manage fonts alongside other digital assets in one place. Designers, marketing teams and external partners can work with approved files and current versions.

Intel One Mono survived its brief retirement

Intel One Mono connects brand identity with a specific function. It was created for an environment closely associated with Intel, while its design responds to the real needs of developers.

Its brief retirement and quick return are also a reminder that a valuable brand asset does not need to be constantly redesigned or updated.
