What is photo metadata? EXIF, IPTC and XMP explained simply

A photo is more than just what you see on the screen. The file can contain additional information, such as when the photo was taken, what device was used, or who created it.

This information is called photo metadata. It helps organize, search, and manage images. There are three main types you will come across: EXIF, IPTC, and XMP.

What is photo metadata?

Metadata is simply data about data. It adds extra information and context to the image itself.

Some metadata is created automatically when a photo is taken. Other information can be added later.

Photo metadata can include:

  • date and time the photo was taken,
  • camera or smartphone model,
  • shutter speed, aperture, and ISO,
  • GPS coordinates,
  • author name,
  • copyright information,
  • photo description.

Not every photo contains all of this information. It depends on the device, its settings, and what has happened to the file since it was created.

EXIF: technical information about a photo

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is the best-known type of digital photo metadata. Most EXIF data is created automatically by the camera or smartphone.

EXIF can include the device model, date the photo was taken, aperture, ISO, focal length, or shutter speed. If the device has access to location data, it may also store GPS coordinates.

For example, photographers can use EXIF data to check which camera settings were used for a particular shot.

However, EXIF is not reliable proof of a photo’s origin. The data can be edited or removed. Some online services also automatically delete EXIF data when an image is uploaded.

IPTC: who created the photo and what it shows

IPTC metadata focuses more on the content of a photo and its creator. Its history is closely linked to news organizations and the exchange of photographs between editorial teams.

IPTC metadata can include:

  • author,
  • title and description,
  • copyright information,
  • location,
  • keywords,
  • additional information about the content.

The difference between EXIF and IPTC is fairly simple. EXIF mainly tells you how a photo was taken. IPTC describes what the photo shows and who created it.

XMP: metadata for modern file workflows

XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) was created by Adobe. It provides a flexible way to store and exchange metadata across files and applications.

XMP can contain information about the author, usage rights, description, or edits made to a file.

You may also come across separate files with the .xmp extension. These are often used for non-destructive editing of RAW photos. The original image data remains unchanged, while information about the edits is stored separately.

EXIF, IPTC, and XMP do not have to compete with one another. They can complement each other within the same workflow.

What can photo metadata reveal about you?

GPS data is particularly worth paying attention to. If your smartphone stores location information when taking photos, the original file may contain the exact location where the image was captured.

This is worth checking before publishing photos taken at home or in another private location.

At the same time, many social networks and online services modify or remove metadata when processing images. Missing EXIF data therefore does not automatically mean that a photo has been manipulated.

How to view photo metadata

You can view some metadata directly in the file properties on Windows or macOS. Photo management and editing software usually provides access to more detailed information.

It is important to distinguish between what the file actually contains and what a particular application is able to display.

For a single photo, metadata may simply provide a few useful details. With thousands of company images, metadata can determine whether you are able to find the right file at all.

  • Do not rely solely on file names.
  • Create a consistent metadata structure for larger asset libraries.
  • Check which metadata is preserved during export.

Well-structured metadata is most useful when it helps people actually find the content they need.
